One of the most effective protections against hackers attacking a PC is a personal firewall-a piece of software that protects against hacker attacks in two ways. It blocks unwanted inbound traffic, so probes cannot make it through. And it blocks outbound traffic as well, so a Trojan or piece of spyware can’t make an outbound connection to a hacker, telling him to take control of the PC.
Anti-spyware software and antivirus software stop spyware and viruses from infecting a PC. They run constantly in the background. watching for infections and stopping them before they start. They also include scanners that scan a system for infections and then clean out any infections that are found.
Operating system vulnerabilities are often exploited by hackers as a way to break into a system. Downloading and installing the latest patches ensures that the operating system is up to date and as secure as possible.
One way hackers gain access to a PC is through Trojans that have been installed on it. Trojans can get onto PCs in many ways, including when someone opens spam and follows a link. Antispam software helps protect against hacking, as well as prevents spam recipients from clicking spam links. Trojans or malicious software is also installed when people click on pop-up ads or windows that appear when they surf the Internet. A pop-up killer, such as is built in to Internet Explorer, Firefox, and other browsers, helps protect against Trojans being installed by pop-ups.
Unprotected wireless networks let hackers invade a network and, from there, worm their way into every computer on the network and do damage. Wireless networks can be protected in a number of ways-for example, by turning on encryption or by using settings that let only specific computers onto the network and deny access to all others
